When A rapper performs on a show like SNL.. (Royalties/samples question)

Just a question

But when a Rap artist performs on a show like SNL or Nickelodeon's All that, and the song they perform has a sample in it

Who is responsible for paying royalties over to original artist the rapper sampled?

The network or the performing artist?

Like when Coolio performed "Fantastic voyage" On Nickelodeon's all that, Was it Nickelodeon's job to pay Lakeside royalties for the sample or Coolio's?

reply

All That ????
I believe the artist/producer pays when the song is recorded. Not every time it's played.

all that was just an example. because the re-runs cut the music guests out

So I was think that because they had a lot of Rap and R&B singers on that used samples, maybe having to also pay the artist that was sampled in addition to paying the performing artist could be why they don't want to put the music acts back on the reruns

And IDK about that.

There were reports saying Band Slick Slick and the wicked was suing their own label for failing to mail the royalty check they were entitled to for Justin Timberlake's "suit and tie" (which sampled them) being used in a bud light commercial
