How to get into rock?

any essential list of albums in chronological order or particular way of getting into the genre from its core? never really listened to rock at all apart from whatever topped the charts in the 2000s such as californication. i know "rock" is extremely general but i dont know much about any of the subgenres and would like to first become a fan of rock as a whole

Probably want to start with the Beatles. I'd say they're the among first and certainly the most influential bands of all time. From there, maybe the Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin.

If you really want to go back, start with Elvis, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, some blues artists like Muddy Waters might also be informative, though I've never listened to him.

For American rock I'd say The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen (a personal favorite), Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan (more folk)

Then, of course, there's AC/DC from Australia, mate. Oh, and why not INXS? I liked them too.

Oh, and maybe watch "School of Rock" with Jack Black :)

Check out Rated R by Queens of the Stone Age, it has something for everyone.

I’d start with Rock/Pop if you realize you like it, then start with the classics, and go from there.

I’d start with Bon Jovi, their rock Is very accessible and easy to like then I’d go with Aerosmith also a very easy type of rock to enjoy.

So it's been 4 years. How's your adventures with rock music been? Who's your favorite today?

reply

If you get his third post after four years of radio silence, I'm gonna plotz.

yeah i realized after i posted that the OP has only posted twice in 4 years. Sorry I'm still getting acquainted with this site. BTW, Why doesnt the music general show up on the "trending thingy" on the main page?

reply

Dude, absolutely zero need to apologize. Notice two years passed after Kowalski posted before the next one. Personally, I love seeing zombie threads resurrected. Did it on IMDb, and do it here. No sense making a new thread if one exists already.

Huh, you know I have no idea how the "trending thingy" works. I just ignore it and scroll down to Latest Posts, which afaik does show *every* post on the site. But at only sixteen threads per page, even though this is a relatively slow forum, especially compared to the old IMDb boards, it's easy to miss posts even from a couple hours ago that get buried on page four or so.

Oh, and I'm sure you've realized this, but usernames that don't have a (post count) next to them, are legacy IMDb posts, and that user likely doesn't have an active account here, so definitely don't expect them to reply or even see your post. Not to say that what you have to say won't be of interest to some random active user, say, like me. :D

I’m still upset about the thread that I made 18 years ago on Internet movie database on the human centipede part one. I made a joke that I actually stole from Jim Gaffigan the stand-up comedian. But nobody actually recognized the theft and thought that I was really funny, and the thread was active for a pretty decent amount of time. Of course if anybody called me out on theft, I would immediately fess up but so far nobody did. ha ha ha ha ha ha . This new forum here seems to be pretty good. I don’t see a lot of censorship which I think is a good thing. My assumption was that the Internet movie database closed down because there were too many snowflakes getting offended by strong opinions. Of course I could be wrong about that, but who knows?

reply

What about the thread upsets you? That nobody got the reference?

I actually preferred Human Centipede 2. The casting of the lead was brilliant. Couldn't make it 20 minutes in to part 3 however. Just a cheap cash grab, imo.

And my theory about IMDb getting rid of the boards was Amazon didn't like people giving negative reviews, which affected their bottom line, but who knows? I mainly hung out in the horror board, and individual film boards, and wasn't bothered by many trolls in those.

Oh, and there's another IMDb board replacement that actually looks and works a lot like the original boards. You can even link your new account to your old one and see (almost) your whole post history, coincidentally, mine goes back 18 years as well. The only thing is it's more of a mess userwise, with actual useful discussions about movies more few and far between than here. https://filmboards.com/ I really only go there to look up my old posts and get a hit of nostalgia, but it's pretty toxic, so mainly hang out here.

I reread my last post and realized that I wasn’t making myself clear. Basically I can’t log into my old Internet movie database account because I lost that information. a long time ago. At one point, I used to read the old thread that I made about human centipede part one and get a kick out of the replies that people replied to my original post. But now since I don’t know my password anymore, I can’t make that trip down nostalgia Lane anymore. I think I’m OK just sticking here to this website. There’s really only one person that pisses me off all the time but they seem to be not around so much anymore or maybe I’ve blocked them without remembering if that’s even possible to do on this website I’m not sure.

reply

Ah, glad I suspected that as a possible reason. Well, if you ever want to take a trip down memory lane and see your (almost) entire IMDb post history, you know where to find it...

Yeah, I only block people if they make me scroll too much past all their solely, usually political, off-topic posts. If I even just see *one* thread about movies they made semi-recently, I would let them slide. Carpal tunnel syndrome sucks, I hear.
