Songs that sound similar to each other

What are some tunes that make you go "Hmm...that sounds like..."
A couple I noticed are The Kinks' Picture Book and Green Day's Warning.
Green Day also has 21 Guns that sounds like Electric Light Orchestras' Telephone Line.
Then there's Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4 and The Beatles' While My Guitar Gently Weeps and again, Green Day's Brainstew.
The drums on American Girl are similar to The Strokes' Last Night....

I love Monument's 2014 album "Renegades", but they wear their influences on their sleeves. For example:

There could be a couple of interpretations of that, with one of them being a song that sounds just like one artist but is really by another, usually lesser-known artist.

"Lies." Sounds like the Beatles, but is really the Knickerbockers.
"Psychotic Reaction." Sounds like the Yardbirds, but is really the Count Five.
"Lunatic Fringe." Sounds like Tom Petty, but is really Red Rider. (And when I first heard it, I thought the title was "Lemme Take Reds.")

A number of artists have been sued for plagiarism:

"My Sweet Lord." George Harrison got sued for ripping off the Chiffons' "He's So Fine."
"Whole Lotta Love." Led Zeppelin got sued for ripping off Willie Dixon's "You Need Love." This happened to Zep a lot, including the recent trial involving Spirit's instrumental "Taurus" as the source for "Stairway to Heaven." The case was dismissed.
"Surfin' USA." The Beach Boys got sued for ripping off Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen." Never mind that Chuck re-wrote his own songs anyway, such as "Little Queenie" as "Run Rudolph Run" and "School Day" as "No Particular Place to Go." Which brings us to--
"The Old Man Down the Road." This one is really good: John Fogerty got sued by his own record label for allegedly ripping off his own song, "Run through the Jungle." He won the case.

You are obviously very knowledgeable about music. You mentioned a couple songs I was going to mention.

"Lunatic Fringe." Sounds like Tom Petty, but is really Red Rider. (And when I first heard it, I thought the title was "Lemme Take Reds.")
That is hilarious. I have heard of a lot of mondegreens, but never heard that one.

In 2006 a US radio station claimed that Red Hot Chili Peppers hit single, "Dani California" had plagiarised Tom Petty's song, "Mary Jane's Last Dance" even calling for Petty to sue the Chili Peppers. Longtime Petty and Chili Peppers producer Rick Rubin produced both songs. Petty responded by saying that he was not going to sue the Chili Peppers and felt that there was no negative intent and that a lot of rock and roll songs sound alike. The main riff in Petty's song, however, resembles the main riff in another song called "Waiting for the Sun" which was released in 1992 by The Jayhawks. The Jayhawks were the opening act for Petty's tour in 1992 and Benmont Tench played on both "Waiting for the Sun" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance".

It blew my mind when I heard that the riff from disco hit "Funkytown" was taken from the song "The Changeling" by The Doors.

Yeah, I have a bit of a mondegreen issue. Half the time, though, the real lyrics aren't as fun as what I thought I heard.

Interesting info about Petty and the RHCP song. He's right about rock and roll songs often sounding alike. In fact, any time I start to hear "Mary Jane's Last Dance" (which is one of my favorite Petty songs), I immediately think of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young just in the guitar sound, which reminds me of "Long Time Gone."

"I live uptown/I live downtown/I live . . . in Funkytown"?

There's a mash-up for you. And thanks to you, I now know why that guitar lick in "Funkytown" sounded so familiar.

Hey yeah! Good call. There's a lot of great realizations on this thread. Speaking of the Doors, they almost got sued by The Kinks for the similarity between Hello, I Love You and All Day and All Night.
