Is "band" strictly a band, or does it also mean "artist"--that is, an individual can be considered a "band"?

It can be band or artist, either one.

I wasn't going to participate in this thread, but Izzy inspired me to do so. Furthermore, I'm using Izzy's additional award categories:

Favorite Rock Band (Of All Time): Judas Priest (1979's "Unleashed in the East" through 2001's "Demolition" - excluding 1986's "Turbo" and 1988's "Ram It Down")

Coolest Rock Band Name: Iron Maiden

Favorite Rock Album Cover: "Somewhere in Time" – Iron Maiden (1986). Not my favorite Maiden album, but the cover is incredibly detailed and full of what we would now call Easter eggs: http://www.dream-wallpaper.com/art-wallpaper/iron-maiden-wallpaper/1920x1200/free-wallpaper-24.html

Favorite Singer: Tie between Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), and Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)

Favorite Lead Guitarist: Eddie Van Halen (The Van Halen band was my "gateway drug" to the larger world of heavy metal)

Favorite Bassist: Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)

Favorite Keyboardist: Claude Schnell (Dio) - I used to hate keyboards in heavy metal, but Dio was the first band that made them palatable to me.

Favorite Drummer: Dave Lombardo (Slayer) - I have to give a shout-out to my one-time favorite band, and this is as good as any way to do it. I still remember a review of Slayer's "Reign in Blood" album which said it made Metallica's "Master of Puppets" sound like it was "recorded by a bunch of wimps". And Lombardo is a big reason that was true. (FYI - I am a Metallica fan.) No wonder Slayer followed that up with the slower "South of Heaven" - on "Reign in Blood" they were pretty much operating at the limit of human endurance.

Favorite Drummer: Dave Lombardo (Slayer)
Lombardo was pretty amazing. I lost whatever interest I had in Slayer when he left.

Indeed he was. Wikipedia even notes:

Lombardo is most widely known as a very aggressive, phenomenal and exceptionally skilled heavy metal drummer. His use of the drums has been called "astonishingly innovative" and earned him the title "the godfather of double bass" from Drummer World.

I was about to say the same was true for me. However I checked, and the last Slayer album I purchased, "Divine Interention", was their first album to feature Paul Bostaph on drums. I have to say that Bostaph did a fine job, and he was not the reason this was my final Slayer album.
