What are your favorite concerts?

I have seen well over a hundred concerts. When people ask my favorites that is really hard to answer. There are several factors to consider. Was it one of my favorite acts or one that I merely liked? Were the seats first 20 rows or in the upper deck? Was it my first concert or my hundredth?

Best Concerts
----------------
W.A.S.P. - Birch Hill - Old Bridge, NJ late '90s

The Cult - The Spectrum - Philadelphia 1990

King's X - The Ritz - New York City early '90s

The Smithereens - Stone Pony - Asbury Park, NJ early '90s

Prince - Nassau Coliseum - Uniondale, NY 1985

Weird Al Yankovic - Count Basie Theater - Red Bank, NJ late '90s

Honorable Mentions
----------------
Paul McCartney - Madison Square Garden - New York City 1989
Lenny Kravitz - The Beacon Theater - New York City early '90s
Guns 'N Roses/Metallica - Giants Stadium - East Rutherford, NJ 1993
David Bowie - Giants Stadium - East Rutherford, NJ 1987
The Bangles - Rider College - Lawrenceville, NJ 1989
Ringo Starr & The All-Starr Band - Radio City Music Hall - New York City 1992
Elton John with George Michael, Lionel Richie and Bruce Hornsby Benefit Concert - Madison Square Garden - New York City early '90s
Jeffrey Gaines - Fastlane - Asbury Park, NJ 1992
Raging Slab - Connections - Clifton, NJ late '90s
New York Steel Benefit Show featuring Twisted Sister, Anthrax, Ace Frehley, Sebastian Bach and Overkill - Hammerstein Ballroom - New York City 2001

Worst Concert
-------------
U2 - Giants Stadium - East Rutherford, NJ 1987

U2 played the same songs in the same order for almost every date of their Joshua Tree tour. The Edge played the same four chords. He had a horrible guitar sound with too much distortion. Bono pulled a fan out of the crowd to play guitar for one song. I thought the fan blew away The Edge.

I don't like stadium concerts. But if a band plays a stadium then video screens are a necessary evil. Back then U2 played stadiums without video screens. That was before their Zoo TV tour, when their concerts became elaborately staged multimedia events. It was as if U2 had admitted watching TV was more interesting than watching them play live. Bono is a pompous jerk. U2 are an overrated band who try to use interesting production of their albums to stay relevant.

I had heard that U2 were a great live band. I have no idea why. I think it was because for a lot of people who grew up in the 80s it was their first concert.

Worst Opening Acts
----------------
Chris Isaak - Radio City Music Hall - New York City 1987
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam - Giants Stadium - East Rutherford, NJ 1987

Chris Isaak was more interested in shaking his tush and cracking jokes than making music. Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam were not a good live act and had no business opening a stadium show for David Bowie.

When I was young we could only see concerts in Marquette, MI.

Best: Black Oak Arkansas opened for Ted Nugent, rumor was they didn't know how to play their instruments (but it really was the best).

Another Ted concert was cut short by a bomb hoax. We drove a hundred miles for that.

Worst opening act: Some guy named Walter Heath opened for Seals & Crofts. He said to "remember my name". That's the only reason I remember him.
S & C invited everyone to stay after the concert to hear about their religion. I looked back as I was leaving and didn't see anybody.

I heard Black Oak Arkansas were an excellent live act. I never heard that they didn't know how to play their instruments. When Van Halen were starting out a lot of people accused David Lee Roth of being a total ripoff of BOA lead singer Jim "Dandy" Mangrum. I think Mangrum still tours as Jim Dandy's Black Oak Arkansas. BOA backup singer Ruby Starr passed away in 1995 from lung cancer and a brain tumor at age 45. She should have been a big star.

The Ted Nugent bomb hoax may have been made by someone who didn't like his politics.

Seals and Crofts did push their Bahai religion at their concerts. I never heard of Walter Heath. I had to google his name. He doesn't even have a wikipedia page. Big shock - he is also a member of the Bahai faith. The Bahais recruited at my college. I knew of only one guy who was interested and he was a complete moron. They used a cute girl to recruit him.

Holy crap, you have seen a lot of concerts. The best concert I've witnessed is Tom Petty a couple years ago. It was a religious experience. The Dead Weather at First Ave in MPLS is second.
The worst concert I saw was Simple Plan...they were free tix.

I am a big music fan and love concerts. I won a lot of concert tickets on the radio. I even won a few from record stores. And concert tickets were more reasonably priced back in the day.

First Avenue became a sacred place to me and a lot of friends after the movie "Purple Rain". Have you seen Prince and acts he worked with live?

I wish I would have seen Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live. About ten years ago they were playing at a local concert shed. I had something else planned that night. I can't remember what. I was dating a Deaf woman (I am a hearing person who signs) at the time and would have taken her to see Tom Petty. I was planning on requesting a American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter from the concert venue. I thought seeing Tom Petty's lyrics interpreted into ASL would have been awesome. I have an acquaintance who fronts a Tom Petty tribute band. I guess that is the next best thing.

I did attend one concert with my Deaf girlfriend. She wanted to see Jesse McCartney when he was playing near her home. She liked his TV show "Summerland". That was a very strange concert. His music wasn't really my style. And the crowd was mostly teenage and preteen girls and their chaperons. And the interpreter resembled the late Geraldine Ferraro.

reply

Haha, I had to look up Geraldine Ferraro. Although I do enjoy some Prince I never got to see him. I did get to see Stone Temple Pilots with Weiland and Sonic Youth though. That would have been great to see and experience an ASL interpretation of Tom Petty. I just went to a wedding with a super passionate interpreter. She didn't resemble anyone :)but was fun to watch and really added to the experience. You're right about ticket prices, gol darn. At least Ticketbastard got their comeuppance and had to refund money to customers recently after years of gouging. That's a victory.

I've only been to a few concerts in my life, but my favorite was Def Leppard. I always wished I could go back in time and see CCR live, though.

reply

Ooo, definitely. I might even see CC Revisited although it's really not the same.
