David Mellor played his favourite violinists on Classic FM on Sunday.

OK, he's a twat, but his show at the weekend is probably the best thing on the station as he often plays older recordings on his show. Good luck hearing vintage recordings anywhere else on the station.

His favourite violinists:

Heifetz
Oistrakh
Perlman
Kogan
Ginette Neveu (his favourite female violinist)
Kavakos (his favourite contemporary fiddler)

Heifetz and Oistrakh he named as the best two violinists of the 20th century. Perlman the best over the last 30-40 years or so.

An enjoyable show. Sadly only available live.

Only just seen this...

Yes, he's a pretty grim example of humanity, but he can't be all bad with that list. Hard to quibble with his '2 best' choice either. Perlman's never done a great deal for me...

The trill at 1'02" always cracks me up:

The Mendelssohn shred's very entertaining too...you have to be an excellent player to play that badly, if you hear what I mean...

Yeah, that did sound a bit "off"!

I don't really have a favourite modern violinist.

EDIT: Actually, I used to be fond of Vengerov .. but I'm guessing you're not a big fan?! 

I used to be a huge admirer of Vengerov, but it got to the stage where I just couldn't bear watching him with his smug face & annoying way of shoving his chin down your throat when he played.

Saw him play the Tchaik at the Concertgebouw 20 years or so ago & it was excellent, even with a string breaking at the start of the 3rd movement.

I don't really follow any modern violinists; I just don't feel the need when there are so many great recordings from great players of yesteryear. I'm of course glad that there are modern virtuosi to wow the concert halls, but it's such a crowded market these days I'd never know who to sample, & brand spanking new digital recordings don't tempt me anyway.
