After Edwin Fischer, why does anyone else even bother

I love Fischer but he is a bit too Calvinistic for Mozart. (Though not for Schubert!)


Wilhelm Kempff is my man for Mozart piano concerti. And Lili Krauss mah woman.

I like Fischer, but he cannot have been said to be the swiftest, or most graceful Mozartian; nor did he have the loveliest singing tone. (Though he did have an admirable coherence in whatever he did play.)

There are many other Mozart players to love: Hess, Kraus, Kempff, Uchida...

Because, I suppose, no one but you appears to argue that his interpretations are so overwhelmingly perfect and compleat as to make any further exploration pointless!

Certainly, he's very damn good. I rely on Brendel and Kempff as the mainstays in Mozart's piano repertoire.

The Klavierkonzert Nr 20, K466: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkei8G-7ey8 — here, Kempff is magnificent in the minor key, supremely human, lyrical, and expressive, yet strictly classical.
