Nikon D80 and SB600 Flash Help!

For whatever reason, I absolutely cannot figure out how to make my SB600 flash communicate with my Nikon D80 once it's mounted top of the camera. Using it wirelessly isn't a problem, and that's exclusively how I've been using it.

I really need to stop being resigned to just 'holding' my external flash when it's not on the light stand, though. Being able to have it communicate with my camera while mounted would free up an extra hand.

I'd sincerely appreciate anyone's input as to how to get this problem sorted. I have no idea why I'm so bad at finding a tutorial online to walk me through. It seems like everything is step-by-step instructions for someone understanding how to get their flash to communicate with their camera wirelessly, which isn't my predicament.

I managed to find someone offline who could help me out with this when I showed them my equipment, but seeing it all written down definitely helps. Thanks so much!!
