Camera suggestions

So I'm just getting into photography and I'm wondering what kind of camera to get. I'm willing to spend a decent amount, but nothing too crazy. I'm particularly interested in nature photography and thus a camera that would be good for the outdoors. Any feedback would be most appreciated.

How much do you want to spend?

Do you want to photograph things close up, far away or both?

Will you be printing pictures at a large size?

$500 is probably my total upper limit. I'd like something more in the $300 range if possible. I'd like to take photos from both close up and far away. And I don't really plan on printing any pictures, so that's not a big concern. I'm just looking for something decent, nothing too fancy.

This might be just what you need:

It's a fairly simple Panasonic with decent size images, a massive zoom and all for $270. That's a good camera for the money.
