what's the difference between/uses for these two lenses?

EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
EF 50mm f/1.8 II

The f1.4 goes a bit wider, so may be of use when it's darker or when a shallower field depth is wanted. It's probably sharper too.

Well, one is the cheaper version of the other. But the 50mm 1.8 is really satisfying. Start with that one.
