Chicken for dinner in one hour?????

ok I just saw this Bernie Mac episode where Bernie was going to get a snack but his wife told him that they are having dinner soon.

Bernie was saying yes but it's in an hour and we are having chicken right? Aren't we having chicken? We're having chicken right Wanda baby? Yeah, we're having chicken.

So I'm just lost but I don't think it was a joke or reference.

I'm taking this as chicken perhaps isn't that filling like some other dinner like steak, hamburger, meat loaf, or beef? That's the way he was acting like because they were having chicken for dinner a small snack wouldn't hurt but yet if it was something else it would make a difference.

That's what I'm just confused at.
