Nobody tried to assasinate Jefferson Davis
He was the Confederate president and nobody in the Union tried to (or succeeded) at assasinate for or at the very least trying him for treason.
Sure President Lincoln gave his orders to make peace with the South at the end of the war, but no rouge elements of the Union cause never tried to make a move against him or any other members of the Confederate leadership.
This sends a clear message that the Union supported the cause of the Confederate States of America. I'm surprised ruthless annihilation wasn't the policy of the Union.
