Were Vietnamese-Americans allowed to serve in U.S. military
during the Vietnam War?
shareYeah. Can't see why they would not. Especially after Japanese-Americans were still allowed to serve in WWII.

shareA good question. I'm not aware of Vietnamese living in America until the '70s when we began to bring in refugees but they may have been here and included in those classified as Orientals or Asians. Most likely they would have liable to the draft or enlisting.

Do recall the Republic of Vietnam was America's ally. As for American citizens born in Vietnam - or indeed any Warsaw Pact country or Communist China - they'd be screened for ideology, not ethnicity. Communists were not welcome for reasons that I trust are obvious.
shareTo clarify, I meant ethnic Vietnamese who were born or resided in America, enlisted or drafted into the American military in the '60s and '70s.
shareMy point being that if Vietnamese were allies, why would the US prevent Vietnamese Americans from service in the US armed forces?
shareOut of curiosity I googled several variations of "Vietnamese-Americans serving in US armed forces 1965-1973", "Vietnamese serving in US armed forces 1965-1973", etc. and failed to get a single hit in the first 5 pages.
My guess is that the number of Americans of Vietnamese descent or Indochinese descent or of French Indochinese or French colonial descent was so small as to be statistically insignificant prior to 1975. Suffice it to ask that if they were American citizens they would have been as subject to the draft or as eligible to enlist as any other American citizen?
It might have been there were only three race classifications: WHITE which would include Native Americans, Hawaiians, Hispanics, Middle Easterners, and peoples of the Indian Sub-continent, BLACK, and ORIENTAL/ASIAN which would include some Pacific Islanders such as Filipinos Polynesians, and Maori, but Samoans would be classified as WHITE.
