Trivial History Today: The Randi 'Challenge' Has Been Terminated...

...and it's way past time, too.

Nothing more appropriate than a deluded fraud claiming everyone else is a fraud, or deluded.

Bye bye Randi, and good riddance.

Hahaaayyyy....MEN!

It hasn't been terminated, which you would know if you had read the link correctly. It's on hold until new protocols are introduced.

However, It amazing how tetchy woo woo merchants can get when simply asked to demonstrate that which they claim to be capable of doing.

The "challenge" is terminated. The termination will no longer apply after those new protocols are in place. Time will tell.

If you had read the link correctly, you would realize that "psychics" are not at all "tetchy" about demonstrating their claims. Rather, they are quite understandably and rationally savvy in refusing to naively fall into Randi's obvious, peculiarly and particularly rigged traps. That is, they refuse to capitulate to Woo Woo Master Randi's wiles. Three cheers for them.

reply

It is on hold but still open to high profile applicants.

"..any established psychic may contact JREF via email to be tested directly (preferably with an independent, third party TV crew.)"

..refusing to naively fall into Randi's obvious, peculiarly and particularly rigged traps.

There are no traps, they are simply asked to state what they can do and how they will demonstrate it. this is agreed on by both sides before continuing and there have been a huge number of people tested and they have all failed.

Can you elaborate on the detail of these "rigged traps" with any real evidence because if not you might come across as one of those tetchy whiners.

Can you do any better? how would you test for example, water diviners?

There are no traps

Mostly this: i.e., that JREF/Randi, not "Science" controls the parameters, and that's the primary trap:

the challenge is meaningless by scientific standards. It’s not a study and it can’t be replicated. It’s a one off. As it is entirely controlled by one person who has no scientific experience, is known to have strong views and has published no scientific peer reviewed papers on the subject, The challenge carries no scientific weight whatsoever.

...plus...

the million dollar prize has not been won because it is simply not a good way to demonstrate paranormal powers. The million dollar challenge requires that the applicant has to beat 1 million to one odds. Setting such a high barrier for success makes sense if you are risking a one million dollar prize. However, 1 million to one odds are much higher than the scientific standard of proof so this challenge is not necessarily the best or fairest way to determine if paranormal abilities are genuine. Designing a test that is fair to both the applicant and the challenger requires sophisticated knowledge of statistics (How many trials would be needed for a psychic to have a 95% confidence level that they could beat million to one odds if their accuracy was 75%?) Most psychics don't have the understanding of statistics necessary to look out for their own interests and therefore most applicants will not be able to demand a protocol that gives them a fair chance of winning. This is the most likely reason no one has won the prize

you might come across as one of those tetchy whiners

"Coming across AS" connotes "coming across TO", i.e., to an audience. When the, uhmmm..."skeptical community"... launches their buzzwards like "tetchy" or "woo woo" on me or anyone else, I look on such epithets mostly as badges of pride - you know, like when the Nixon White House released its "Enemies List" and all kinds of Nixon critics called and wrote the White House demanding that their names be added to the list. Same thing here as regards debunkers' name-calling and animistic, banishing-magic mantras.

The Amazing Randi's and his 'Million Dollar Challenge' have been debunked.

I guess he needed the money for his elaborate demagogue funeral.
