I would like to know what film explores all the complexities of the unconscious?

All the complexities? I doubt there is such a movie.

I know of a few that delves into it; sci-fi movie Altered States (1980) and Flatliners (1990) which I barely remember.

I know a couple sci-fi movies where it kind of spoils the ending: Sphere (1998) and Forbidden Planet (1956).

"Need" is just a fiction. As is "should", "must", "value" and "importance".
