I did a movie marathon with Godzilla 1956, Godzilla 2014, Cloverfield

I also did it with Godzilla 1998 titled When Monsters Become The Ultimate Face Of Terror. Check out blog

The second movie of the marathon is Roland Emmerichs 1998 criminally underrated and misunderstood monster blockbuster titled

I don't agree. The fault is on the movie-makers who decided to completely re-imagine what Godzilla was all about and then try to pass it off as Godzilla. It would have been better if they had created their own original Kaiju creature without linking it to more famous monster.

If it's criminally underrated it's because it considered a slap in the face of longtime Godzilla fans, and the movie isn't misunderstood, Godzilla fans realize it was an attempt to cash in on the Godzilla franchise.

Another problem with Emmerichs Godzilla flick, it tried to be too cutesy, funny and clever, hardly a recipe to inspire horror.

Anyway, enjoyed the blog and any kaiju fans are always welcomed! 

I liked the 1998 monster, but it weren't Godzilla. I was new to the interwebs (is that what the kids are calling it?) in those days, but just about the day after the release of the film, Godzilla fans were calling the monster 'GINO' (Godzilla In Name Only').

I'm with you: make a NEW kaiju. That's what they did, after all. But don't call it by another monster's NAME. Would you cast Mike Tyson as Rocky Balboa?

Well, YOU might, but I know some things about you that you wouldn't want to get out onto the wires, so just say 'no,' okay?

I was SO hyped to see the American Godzilla in 1998; it was the first - and, to this date, the ONLY - movie I stood in line for the midnight Friday showing, thereof.

The fact that the monster was NOT Godzilla made it impossible for me to enjoy the film. I was so annoyed by their misrepresentation of Godzilla that I barely noticed the rest of the movie. Except the annoying premise that 'Tatapolis' is a difficult name to say.

And I did go down - LAWD, how I DID go down - unto the desert, the broken and the endless desert, whereabout no true kaiju film may existeth...and I wished, yay, I WISHED, that I and all of the poor kaiju fans would be gifted, I say, GIFTED! with a monster that we could BELIEVE in!

Oh, children...how poorly were we served...I am sorry...how poorly were we served...

What did we receive? WHAT DID WE RECEIVE?!

We got Pa-Ci-Fic Rim. That...is what we received. DID we get a monster movie? DID we get true Kaiju?

Oh no, no, no...no, my friends, that is NOT what we received.

We got...a bunch...of giant...SEA SLUGS! And robots? ROBOTS? My friends, we got better giant robots in REAL STEEL, and at least with that, we got Hugh Jackman!

Tell me I'm wrong, friends!

Tell me I'm right!

But, my lost and wandering sheep, I believe there is yet hope. For in 2014, a Godzilla did arise from the filmmakers of the Golden State (and every animation studio outside of Antarctica, to judge by the end credits), and lo, he was MASSIVE. He was INTIMIDATING. He was TERRIBLE, and by that, we know he was GOOD!

And still, the Toholy studios carry on, children, and our TRUE Godzilla continues.

Amen, brothers and sisters.

And do NOT intrude upon the holy copyright.

Ha ha ha! That was a good sermon there! From what I've heard about the latest Godzilla,it's the true GZ us kaiju fans have finally been blessed with (it actually got some decent reviews, that is,for a kaiju flick.) I will give the 2014 Godzilla reboot some credit for not only tying itself directly to the historical kaiju genre, but for being a pretty good homage to the Godzilla films itself. Plus it was pretty good, and entertaining too.
