Either one if he/she is given the room to do it, but usually just the filmmaking of the script he/she is hired to direct.

I suppose it depends then which audience one is directing the movie at, does it not ?
(Imho, directors are not robots.)

No they are not robots, and either are actors, but many times the producers and execs think so.

A Director is supposed to transpose the script onto a screen as best he/she can, with all the tools and techniques he/she knows of.
You can show your dreams and nightmares but if it doesn't serve the story, it is no use, then that's just a big mess.

Bringing their vision alive. They visualize a scene before they shoot by getting the right mood, music and how they want the characters to act.
