I feel that we would get a better gauge of his talent if he had worked with directors with some visual talent like Michael Mann, PTA, or Ridley Scott.

That's a good observation, I wonder about him as well, one of the more disappointing work of his was the snow "level" from Inception, I expected something bigger from that scene and it looked flat.
he'll only get better, and at just 54 years of age, wally (sole heir to the Pfabulous Pfister Pfaucet Pfortune) has already proven himself 'a cut above' and then some. wally is a joy to work with, but the same cannot be said of michael mann or ridley scott and, for good reason, many are reluctant to work with either. the work of any/all dp's can be legitimately criticized within the brief context of just a few particular scenes, but by no means is that an accurate measuring stick.
