Head Explosion Effect from the film 'The Proposition'

If anyone has any idea how John Hillcoat or his visual effects team on the movie, "The Proposition" achieved the Head Explosion effect when the Aborigine is shot and his head explodes right after Guy Pearce is speared in the film, I would really appreciate any knowledge on how this was achieved, or how to achieve something similar effects wise. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the dummy head was filled with raw meat and it was shot with a shotgun or they placed an explosive inside the head, that's how most of the practical exploding heads are achieved.

Thanks Comic Guy, thanks for the info, thought it looked incredibly realistic compared to other head explosions I have seen on film, is their any cheaper alternative for a director with a small budget to achieve something similar.
