The History Channel-

Since when did this channel become a haven for modern-day reality shows rather than programs related to history? I used to enjoy this channel because I found it interesting. I saw some of that truckers show and was bored to death.

You now have to go to History International to get what the History Channel used to be.

These NUTWORKS are becoming just too ridiculous.

Where is the science fiction in the "SYFY" channel?

reply

Right, that was recent. The History Channel was one of the last hold-outs for quality programming as nearly as two years back.

Oh they had some lame reality stuff going on even then - but then they went ahead and disregarded the last remnants of history ... which is like ... their purpose in the first place, right?

Makes you wonder if history teachers still assign their kids to watch reality truckers as part of current events class or something.

Mellow Salutations!

And the channel is going even further away still."Top Gear" is premiering at the end of this month.Absolutely, nothing historical about this show. This show belongs on the Speed Channel. Not the History Channel.

Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental

Well, Top Gear has classic cars. Classic cars are history right? (I'm joking, btw)

Leaving aside the fact that USA Top Gear is a crappy remake of the far superior British version, History channel has always had their non-historical stuff.

I remember when they showed movies, but in the commercial breaks they would have some old tweedy professors talk about how historically inaccurate the movie was or something as an effort to placate the audience.

Then there's the Bible code/Aliens/Nostradamus "documentaries" which were pretty much trash to increase audience numbers.

Then they had "The Universe" which is a great documentary, but belongs on Discovery channel or TLC (If TLC cared about science anymore). Its about stuff that predates history for crying out loud!

I guess History is broad enough to include "anything that ever happened," including rednecks driving their trucks one year ago or the Big Bang.

The Smithsonian Channel seems to have decent programming, including documentaries on historical subjects. It's not the usual bile that The "History" Channel spews nowadays i.e. no Ancient Aliens, Bible Code, or fcking Swamp People.

reply

Love Smithsonian but is it only available in HD?

reply

I'm not really sure. I get it on my AT&T Uverse pack which does not include HD channels, so I'm assuming that the one I get is not HD.
