Soaps today vs before

My mom has watched Y&R and All my children, one life, and GH and she has notice over past few years that the show looks more like a tv show then soap maybe they use new cameras now or something but she is like it just dont have that soap feel to it anymore you know like when you watch All my children it looks more like a normal tv show Just wondering if they use different cameras now or lighting etc?

all ABC soap opears use hand-me-down's from the first two seaosn of Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy which gives it a more HD look
