Will there ever be a new soap opera in the future?

If the issues with the economy past, will we ever get new soap operas in the future?

reply

I doubt any new soap operas will surface on network TV as sponsors seem to have lost interest and the loyal fans of existing soaps are aging past the segment of population the sponsors wish to reach. P&G, once the sponsor of most soaps, betrayed the audience base by canceling Search for Tomorrow, Edge of Night, Another World, Guiding Light and plans on dropping As The World Turns, despite large outcries ;by the fan base. Other soaps were ruined (and then cancelled) by network interference: Ryan's Hope and Santa Barbara. The last "new" soap Passions was a silly attempt to build a new, younger audience and look at what happened to it despite some strong casting.

Well.....I guess I'll watch more movies.

Unfortunately, I hate to say it but soaps are a dying genre. SoapNet tried to create a new soap opera with General Hospital: Night Shift. That failed. Now, they're trying these "What If..." Segments with the ABC Characters with 5 minutes shorts. I think if Daytime does transition somehow, it will be online. Crystal Chappell began her Venice web series which has been very successful - and that is almost like a little soap opera.

I hope so. I'm sick to death of Corrie and eastenders, although brilliant, is losing its appeal.

Have you any idea why a raven is like a writing desk?

It seems to be a dying medium...there are only six shows left on the air. I remember a time when there were 13 daytime soaps spread over the three networks.

Yeah, the problem is that soap opera is losing the viewers because of the rating and everybody are not into the soap opera anymore as they used to be in the 60's, 70's, 80's and the 90's. I have the feeling that General Hospital would be cancelled and it will be off-air mostly likely in the future even though it is very intersting and it's very appealing to watch as well.
