is there an easy way to know if a blu is good

I'd like to know if a Blu-ray is worth it but without reading tons of posts on various sites (which can be contradictory as well).
I recently bought two Westerns, Jubal and Hondo, and was disappointed. Hondo looks a little strange, which is probably due to it originally being a 3-D movie. Jubal, however, just doesn't look good at all. To me, the colors look faded and the picture a bit soft.
Also, after buying I read some of the comments and didn't see much that would've warned me away from buying. I realize that quality can be subjective, but I'd like to know if there's a reliable ranking somewhere of Blu-ray transfers/presentation.
