List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpart

Everybody has different preferences. For me as a budding director I am looking for extra feature and content(making of, audio commentaries), even more than the look/audio. It pissed me off when I started seeing many bare back bluray releases of films whose DVD had more content. I think as the latest release whatever be the medium it should have new supplements PLUS all of the ones of the previous releases.

For example last time I checked a few years ago the Terminator bluray had less extra features than it's DVD release. I haven't checked if this has been corrected.

So can you help list any films whose bluray(or latest) release has less features than previous releases.

I don't even mind if they just package the Bluray with the older DVD with features. Example the To live and Die in LA bluray comes with the DVD which has Friedkin's commentary plus the making of doc. Mildly annoying to change discs but still better than owning and forking out separately for two disks.

So list all such cases in your knowledge

The Star Wars saga immediately comes to mind.

Don't get me wrong, the blu-ray set has plenty of great special features not found on the DVD set, but the DVD set has plenty of great special features not found on the blu-ray set.

The Episodes IV-VI original trilogy DVD set has the excellent Empire of Dreams documentary chronicling the rags-to-riches struggle of George Lucas and company to get the original trilogy on the screen and the success and accolades that followed.

The Episodes I-III prequel trilogy DVDs have a lot of great web documentaries on the creation of those films as well as deleted scenes.

However, the blu-ray set contains the wonderful vintage The Making of Star Wars, SP-FX-The Empire Strikes Back and Classic Creatures-Return of the Jedi documentaries as well as spoofs, a look inside Lucasfilm archives warehouse and some fascinating new interviews with all technical and creative personnel on the making of the films.

So each release of the Star Wars saga is a mixed bag. Therefore, to own all video content currently available related to Star Wars, you have to own both the DVDs of I-III, the DVD set of IV-VI and the blu-ray set of I-VI.

It's annoying to have to own two versions, to say the least, but at this point there is no other choice.

It is indeed annoying.
To me bluray/DVD is a boon and a wonderful creation that justifies the art of cinema. To watch a movie on the big screen is one thing but to devour it in the comfort of your bedroom and then watch it's analysis and the creators opinion all the while relaxing on your bed....it is divine.

But then when you read about why they won't include all previous features in a definitive set....to simply make more money is sad.

At this stage I cannot fork out for the Star Wars bluray(which is in my amazon wish list at 80 bucks) and the DVD set. Because I love the saga but it is probably in my top 50 and to do so with Star Wars if have to do it with so many others.

What about the Alien quadrology. I love the bluray set which is filled with so many extra features but it'd piss me off if the DVD set had even one more supplement.

Terminator 1 and 2
Basic Instinct
Kiss of the Dragon
The Hills Have Eyes
Commando
Wild at Heart

Of course it depends which version.. sometimes one country's release will have more extras than any other version, or stuff will get reissued, for example Kingdom of Heaven and Robocop were first released on BD with no extras, but now they've been reissued with full honours.

Yeah that's one reason I won't buy new films(not that I like that many). Tree of life I absolutely adored and the bluray would indeed be amazing but it doesn't have any supplements to speak of(the customnary trailer and a 20 min making of). In a few years we will get a full blown release with audio commentaries by the producers or Pitt. I'll wait.

For alien, the blu-ray set has more special features than the DVD edition, I believe.

Yeah the Alien set compiles all the extras from several different DVD versions. I think it might be missing some behind the scenes footage from the original Special Edition-only release of Aliens. The Alien 3 doco is also expanded from the DVD version.

Good things come to those who wait! I too have gotten wise to the "initial bare-bones, then in a few years, the mondo deluxe special edition" studio release schedule, and have purposely held off buying certain titles because I know a more full-featured release will come later.

If that picture next to your username is you, rish, you're young, and time pokes by in what seems an eternity when you're young. When you get older, years will blur by faster. If you can afford and stand to wait, good things will come!

I'm waiting for 4 directed by Steven Spielberg films to be released individually on blu-ray that are currently only available as part of "The Steven Spielberg Collection", because I already own the other films directed by him that were sold individually, the transfers and special features are great, and I'm not buying them again:

Duel
The Sugarland Express
1941
Always

I'm sure there are new interviews with Sir Stevie in a supplement disc of the mondo box set, but that's OK, Steven; while I enjoy getting inside your head, I'll let your movies speak for themselves.

Duel can be easily mail-ordered to anywhere in the world from JB Hi-Fi in New Zealand.. it's region free too.
