I always spend a few minutes comparing copies of the same film for marks, tears, etc. on the slipcover. If I'm paying for it, I want it in the best condition possible, and I want it to last. I thought I was the only one in the world who does this!!
I feel really self-conscious about it, but I check for the most perfectly undamaged copy of anything I buy of this sort -- Blu-rays, DVDs, books, clothing. I can't just pick the first one of the shelf and buy it, I have to check that there are no nicks, tears, bashes, bends, or other anomalies. I too like to treat my stuff well, and like to get a good start by buying one that's perfectly unmarred.
Sadly, no less than four house-moves in the space of one year have taken their toll, and all my movies, CDs, books, you name it, have now wound up with some kind of tear, bash or scratch to the packaging now. Moving is a bitch...
