Enough of this "Black Friday" rubbish!

We've been bombarded with this garbage since Halloween. Even auto dealers are now using this term in their commercials. This is not what the holiday season is about.

Thanksgiving Day is a holiday, a day off to be spent with family, or however you wish to observe it. It's not a day to conduct business. The following day is the day after Thanksgiving, not "Black Friday." The holiday season is not a time to conduct a pushing and shoving contest to see who can fill a shopping cart the highest with a bunch of shoddy imported junk.

There is no such thing as "Black Friday." This is a term coined by the greedy big retailers who don't know the definition of a holiday. It needs to be removed from the lexicon.

Thanksgiving Day is being threatened with extinction thanks to Macy's, Target, Kohl's and others who have been pushing to have stores open on what is traditionally a day off. It's time to take back the holiday season. A good start is by signing this petition:

Enjoy the holiday season... what's left of it.

Sick of "Black Friday"? Get together with your family and friends and make an agreement to NOT exchange holiday gifts. (Children can be exempt from this, if you like). Trust me, a LOT of people don't really enjoy holiday gift-giving; they don't enjoy the pressure of shopping, and they don't like the gifts they get, either. Agree to use all that time wasted trudging through the mall for more holiday-oriented activities--go to a Christmas concert or show, visit friends and relatives (without spending all your time ripping open gifts and pretending to like the junk you got), attend religious services, or just wander around and look at decorated houses. Our family has not exchanged gifts for several years now,
and nobody misses it. We have more time to enjoy the season.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Those are all great suggestions. I'm glad to see there is someone else out there who appreciates the holidays and regards the season as a special, joyous time of year.

I keep gift-giving to a minimum and what little shopping I do is completed before Halloween. There are sales and promotions happening year-round, and if I see something I know somebody would like, I purchase it then and store it until December.

You won't find me anywhere near a mall from now until after the New Year. There's just too many rude people who don't know the meaning of the holiday season.

It's a hit and miss for me. When I have a great idea for someone, I enjoy the gift giving more than the receiving. On the flipside, when I've got no idea what to get someone it becomes a chore.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who's noticed... One of the neighbors in my parent's subdivision has already decorated their house for Christmas. My mom & I commented on how tacky the whole thing was.

As for the shopping, I prefer to buy everything I choose to gift online. No lines, idiots, or panic attacks due to all the crowds (I tend to avoid malls because of this). Plus, I tend to avoid the headache of shopping for everyone & only shop for a handful of people (gift certificates, mostly).
