Question to 360 and HDTV owners

A friend of mine has a 360 and a 37 inch LCD TV.

I was over at his house while he was watching something and I realized that his 360 was not set at the widescreen mode, so I fixed that. Then he told me he got component cables for the 360. In the settings section for the 360, I wasn't sure what mode to put it on:

480i
480p
720i
720p
1080i
1080p

I know that last gen could do up to 480p (I think) and because he doesn't have the elite 360, he can't do 1080p, but with the component cables, should I tell him to put it on 1080i or 720p?

Thanks to all who reply.

Well, I've got news for you pal, you ain't leadin' but two things: Jack and sh*t and Jack left town

What is the max resolution for his tv. Liek for me my hdtv can only go max 720p which is how most hdtvs are. It depends on your tv ultimatly.

reply

It shouuld be able to get to 1080i. Just switch it in the settings and if the picture shows up in 1080i then use that since you'll get the best picture.

I would put it in the TV's native resolution. Most LCD HDTVs have a native resolution of around 1280x720, or 720p, so setting the 360 to that resolution will get you the best results.

reply

1080i shold be good for your friend.

reply

Your friends TV most likely has a resolution of 1368x768 and will display either 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i.

The vast majority of 360 games are developed to run at 720p natively, so that should be the best option for his TV. 1080i is an interlaced format, and how good it looks is dependent on how well the tv deinterlaces the signal (many do a crap job of it).

reply

If the resolution is 1368x768 go with the 720p.

reply

With mine, it's max resolution is 720p (optimum resolution as determined by Xbox 360 settings), but yet I can view in 1080i, or rather it gives me the option to.
When I select 'Optimum Resolution', it reverts back to 720p.
However, the image shows up for 1080i? Would it be actually projecting 1080i resolution? Or just 720p, since that's the max resolution for my TV?

There are 10 groups of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't.

reply

In your case, the tv will automatically downscale 1080i to it's native res (720p). So using 720p instead will cut out one extra job that your TV has to do, since you want your set to do as little scaling as possible.
