Video Scalers (do they work?)

I dont have an HDTV yet, but when I get one I was thinking about getting a video scaler as well. My relatives have an LCD tv (Sony Bravia 40") and VHS tapes and Laserdiscs look really bad on it. Has anyone had any expirience with video scalers and can someone tell me if they work as well as they claim to upconvert the picture.

It depends on the device, some are better than others. The $80 samsung upconverting SD-DVD uses a straight scaler ASIC which results in an image full of artifacts. OPPO players both scales and interpolates which enhances the image significantly. I can't say it rivals Blu-Ray but it is a big improvement when connected via HDMI
