Ppl i got a new Sony Bravia W550A 40 inches a month ago. Actually there is no HD transmission in our country so i was thinking about buying couple of DVD's to feel the HD magic. I request you ppl to recommend some movies which would look good in HD. I am considering buying Transformers and The Dark Knight. Thanx in advance.....
shareDVDs are standard definition, so you won't really be "feeling the HD magic." You'll want to try to get your hands on a Blu-ray player and Blu-ray discs(assuming Blu-ray is available in your country). You're not seeing anything in HD with DVD--you're simply watching DVD on a bigger screen. What *will* help a bit, if you're not able/ready to get Blu-ray, is to get an upconverting DVD player with an HDMI or component connection (as opposed to the usual composite connection)--they improve the picture quality somewhat, though it's still not high definition.
That being said, Transformers and The Dark Knight will indeed give you the eye candy and entertainment you're looking for. The Matrix, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the list goes on...
Mike's right, the Blu-Ray discs are phenomenal when viewed on a big-screen 1080p display. I've seen several Blu-Rays that are just startling. "Gladiator", "Black Hawk Down", "The Dark Knight" and "Ironman" almost jump off the screen in 3D they are so clear and crisp. The action sequences are also fantastic.
I even have a few "oldies" remastered to Blu-Ray ("2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Star Trek: The First Season") and they look so good that they could have been filmed yesterday.
Without Blu-Ray discs, you are not viewing true HD. I have a 32" Bravia and I bet you are very pleased with your 40 incher. Great product.

Consider buying an Xbox HD-DVD drive, and a heap of HD-DVD movies off eBay. The cost should be a fraction of going Blu-ray. Making it all work may take some effort, and you'll need a computer and video card capable of HD video.
