Phillips' new 21:9 TV

So Phillips has a new TV in a 2.33:1 aspect ratio.

Take a look:

What do you all think? Will it be successful?

I personally love it. The 2.35/2.40 aspect ratio is my favourite aspect ratio. And I've been wanting to have a constant height setup for a long time now, because that's the way aspect ratio are supposed to be. 2.35 is supposed to be WIDER than 1.85... not shorter.

The thing that I really like about this TV is that it actually has more pixels than a full 1080p 16:9 tv. So unlike a 1080p projector with an anamorphic lens in front of it, it shows the 2.35 image on an even higher resolution screen than it does a 1.85 image. Even though HD sources contain 2.35 images in a smaller space, the TV's scaling should make for the smoothest looking picture possible in home video. It

Of course, I want this technology in a projector. TVs are too small for a home theater for me. But this is a step forward, at least. So I hope it does well.

As far as I know, it's only being released in the UK now. I assume if it does well, they'll expand its market.

I'm hoping they make a projector like this soon.

wow that looks so lame. 16:9 is a natural evolution for TV but 21:9 is way too wide. I know that matches the ratio for many movies, but yes, it is shorter vertically than a 16:9 TV. A 16:9 TV matches the human eyesite ratio better than the 21:9 or a 4:3 TV. I DON'T LIKE the 2.35:1 aspect ratio for several reasons. yes when it is utilized by someone who knows that they are doing it is great (Star Wars movies for example), but many recent movies coming out in that ratio look awful because they either look like they need more top and bottom (tops of people's heads are always missing in close ups) or all of the action is in the center of the shot and none on the sides.(all action in a 4:3 or 16:9 safe area)

The 21:9 TV will only work in a home where most of the movies being watched are 2.35:1 and 4:3 programs are kept to a bare minimum. have fun watching programs on skinny screen while I watch stuff on a nice tall screen.

It could be that be webmasters creating the demo on the preview site don't know what the hell they're doing, but it would appear they stretch a 4:3 or 16:9 image to fit the screen, which is absolutely unacceptable. I don't see how anybody could think a bigger picture is better than a non-distorted one. This seems catered to the cheapskate crowd who wants to get "all the screen they paid for!". The fact is, if you want to watch different media with different aspect ratios, you're going to have black bars. DEAL WITH IT.

You don't have to stretch the image. You can pillarbox it if you like.
