When an HDTV is about to conk out-
-does the picture grow darker?
I may be mistaken, but over the past few days, the picture on my HDTV has seemed to be growing darker than it used to be.

What kind of TV is it?
DLP TV bulbs dim after a few years; I recently replaced the one on mine, and that was after five years of frequent use.
Regular LCD TVs with CCFL backlighting, I presume will dim/die over time, but I don't believe those bulbs are user-replaceable, presumably because the CCFL's lifespan ought to be a long, healthy one (say, ten years).
Plasma TVs, of course, will also dim over time--most have a "half-life" (the period of time after which the TV will only be half as bright as it used to be) of anywhere from 30,000-100,000 hours of use (depending on how new/fancy the set is).
It's a regular LCD-TV.
