Those 'wafer' batteries for small electronics have short-lived power?

I have this device I haven't used for 5 months and the two CR2032 batteries are dead. Are these wafer thin batteries, about the size of a nickel, known to drain fast even while in extended non-use?

It depends on the use. The CR2032 cells last for years on computer motherboards where they provide backup power for the real-time clock chip. But motherboard makers install name-brand cells of known quality.

The cells may be no-name Chinese products with lower capacity. The device may not be suited for this type of cell, which is mostly use for very low drain devices like the RTC, LCD clocks and calculators. It could be defective, and draws significant current even when switched off. Chinese manufacturers will happily ship junk that is doomed to fail prematurely, if distributors only care about low price.

Thanks. Lucky the battery replacement was a freebie from a plan I got at the time of purchase.
