If my ipod were to be fixed internally, would all the data be lost?

So, I dropped my Ipod Classic one too many times and now it won't turn on. If I took it to Geek Squad, would all the music, etc. be wiped out?

It depends on what's broken and what they have to do to fix it. It's possible they'd just exchange it for a factory-refurbished unit. Or if just the hard drive is bad, then your data is toast, unless you're willing to try a data recovery service, but that will be costly. Here's a source for replacement hard drives, and they offer a recovery service.

Alternatively, if you can open up the unit, maybe it's feasible to hook up a drive adapter and recover the contents using PC software. If the hard drive is in good condition, making a backup copy would be a good idea before turning it over to the Geeks.
