surround sound help!

This will probably be an easy answer so forgive my stupidity as I'm not great with these things! I have connected my PS3 to my TV via an HDMI cable (TV is connected to a surround sound sysytem) and I'm trying to play the audio through the surround sound system. All I am getting is the TV channel audio not the audio from the PS3. What am I doing wrong, do I need another cable from surround sound to PS3?

Yeah, that's right! That's right! We bad!

Check your TV settings to see if you can reconfigure the TV's output to audio input pass-through.

It seems like the optical out on your TV is designed to output the TV tuner's audio.

Can you instead connect an optical audio out from the PS3 directly to your receiver and simultaneously use HDMI strictly for the video signal? My DVD player allows this but you have to set the configuration in the DVD player (in your case the PS3) to split it up like that.
