getting better audio from blu-ray when you don't have surround

I have a Philips hi-def TV and a playstation 3 but no surround speakers. Watching blu-ray gets to be a pain because 6.1 or 7.1 audio tracks are the standard, and basically the sound effects and music come out too loud and the dialogue is too quiet. I just saw "Layer Cake" on blu-ray and that was the most extreme example yet. I live in an apartment and it sucks having to adjust the volume constantly to keep the sound effects quiet enough and the dialogue loud enough.

What's the best way to get louder dialogue? Changing from Virtual Dolby Surround to stereo mode on my TV seems to help a very little. Can I mess with the volume equalizer on my TV and still keep good audio? Is there some setting I can change on my PS3?
Thanks.

Two channel, you must pick it on DVD in the menu too. Also look for something called Night/ Compression / AC3 Night/ Dynamic in the DVD setup menu and set it to full compression, it's called something differnt on every player it seems.

If this does not help, it's your speakers, in TV speakers, especially some flat panel ones are about like a AM radio. If you have audio out on the TV you could hook up a few powered computer speakers and that may help a ton but you wont approach a real surround sound setup.

PS: Nice movie list in your profile.

Ahhh, yes. It's called dynamic range control in the case of the PS3 and it definitely helps. Thanks dude.
