Surround speaker selection

I bought a pair of tower's to start the surround setup, and was told that it was critical that the center channel speaker be of the same make and model as the towers. The rest (rear's and sub) didn't really matter what make or model. Any truth to this?

Thanks

There's various schools of thought. The original home THX standard required that ALL speakers be identical. This does make sense, since otherwise it's a given that a sound would not have the same character as it was panned around the room. This tends to be impractical, so now the assumption is that a speaker manufacturer will design center and surround speakers that sound as much as possible as the main or tower speakers.

But, if that's not possible or practical, don't lose sleep over it. Even identical speakers will sound different depending on where they are in the room.
