Subtitles on a PAL DVD are blurry. How to fix?

I just received a DVD/PAL in perfect condition from the UK. The only problem is that the subtitles are slightly blurred, though still readable. My DVD is multi-region and can play DVDs from all over the world.

Is there some way to adjust this so the subtitles are sharp and clear?

Maybe they're encoded in the picture, rather than generated by the DVD player. The DVD could have been sourced from a mediocre video version or a poor quality print that already had the subtitles superimposed on it for TV or cinema presentations. Can you change the subs or turn them off?

In rare cases, the subtitles on DVDs can be presented with poorly chosen colors that don't show up well. Here's a page that explains how to edit the subtitle colors:

Thanks. Since the film is in French with English subtitles, I would not want to turn off the subtitles. The subtitles are in white and show up well. They are just a little fuzzy. Changing the color would not add to the sharpness.

In any event, I do not have the files on my PC. It is a DVD purchased from the UK. Perhaps subtitles are encoded in the picture and there's no setting on the DVD player that would make it clearer, but I just thought I would ask.
