TV series, buy on DVD or Blu?

Shows like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and Spartacus definitely require Blu for maximum enjoyment. Not so worried about older shows, or anything comedy/drama that doesn't require high-resolution image to appreciate the VFX work.

I'll buy a TV show or movie on dvd or Blu-ray depending on the available source material. What I am kind of surprised about is the fact that over in Germany, on the Amazon branch over there, they have Blu-ray sets for shows from the 80's that would probably not see a release on Blu-ray over here.

DVD so I can lend them to a friend and donate to the library. Blu for some big movies like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Depends on the type of show... Reality based shows like CSI, Criminal Minds, Bones and so on, are just fine on standard DVDs. Heavy CGI, Scifi and action shows like Falling Skys, Arrow, Supernatural and Walking Dead are a Blu-Ray must.

If the TV series was shot in HD or 35mm film (an inherently HD format), I'll buy it on blu, unless I've already bought it on DVD for a rather large sum of money. Why not? Get the resolution increase!

Some '70s TV series, while shot on 35mm film, will probably only be available on DVD, so I have no choice but to buy them on DVD. I just bought the '70s TV miniseries Roots and Roots-The Next Generations on DVD for this reason.

I got burned on this with 1978's classic sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica! Bought it on DVD over a decade ago and now it's been remastered in HD from the 35mm film elements (in its original broadcast 4x3 AND top-to-bottom cropped for a more theatrical presentation on today's 16x9 HDTVs yet) and put on blu, and of course I'll re-buy it on blu! Oh, well--I got over a decade's worth of enjoyment out of the DVD, money well spent.

If a TV series, like a sitcom, from the '70s was shot on standard-definition videotape ("in front of a live studio audience"), there's no resolution advantage in putting the series on blu, it should be only available on DVD, so I can only buy it on DVD.

Depends on what TV you have. If you spend hard earned money for a 1080p HDTV just to put 480p disks into it you completely wasted your money. I have you a standard definition tube TV, then DVD is right for you.


My answer is neither. Digital HD is the current format. Disks as a whole are dying.

I've just bought the first season of the new HD version of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and am looking forward to seeing the crisp, full 1080p picture that will feel like I'm watching a new show all over again!
