I thought blu-ray was supposed to be more resistant than DVDs

I ... no, scratch that. A friend of mine who used to rip DVDs has recently started ripping blu-rays. With DVDs, it was very rare that the process would fail due to read errors, and when that happened it was always because the disc had visible damage. With blu-rays, even discs that look absolutely perfect sometimes fail. My friend is baffled by this. He thought that blu-rays were supposed to have better resistance to scratches.

Does anybody know what is going on? Is that normal or is there maybe a problem with my friend's blu-ray drive?

Well, the data on a BD is lot denser than the data on a DVD. So a computer trying to rip a BD at high speed is likely to run into problems. He'd probably do well to set the rip speed to something other than max, that could solve the issue.

Blu-rays have a very thin protective layer, so if that is scratched the data is toast. DVDs have a much thicker layer which isn't as tough, but the thickness allows the optics to look past or around surface flaws. About the only really unreadable DVDs I've encountered were ones that had cracks that go right through the data layer.
