Were the Monty Python animations funny?

Even watching them when they were first transmitted as a teenage schoolboy I found them totally unfunny and couldn't wait for the sketches to start again. Watching the re-runs now I feel exactly the same. Does anybody here think they were even remotely funny?

reply

No they're just weird. But it usually gets fun when people discuss them.

Look, mum, I'm a punk rocker!

a lot of the sketches were very 'miss' when you look up the ones that didnt stick in your mind.

2 cartoons i thought were funny:
1) guy covers head in shaving cream and cuts it off
2) the suicideal leaves (i think thats in 'The Meaning of Life')

That's a very good question. I loved/love them but for their artistic merit - I wasted hours drawing Pythonic intestines and caterpillars and sad bulbous faces in the margins of my schoolbooks. Was it funny? I don't know. I do still find the animations attractive.

Actually the iconic bare foot coming down to squash everything in the intro - yes, I find that funny.

Some of them are. I have quite a dark sense of humour and I always found "the mole " skit funny but the vast majority used to scare me as a child, particularly "the Killer Cars"!!!!

having said that, nowadays I cant get enough of Gilliam's work

also, yes!!!!

Like the sketches themselves, the animations were hit-and-miss. Some were funny, some were just plain weird! But they were only there as a linking device (they'd just use CGI these days!), and did give the show a very strong visual trademark.

Make tea, not war.

No. They're creepy and crazy.

We can't be lost; we don't know where we're going.
All that matters is that we're going.
