Porridge

Both were written by the same people, who had success with feature films; both were successes.

Sitcom adaptations are pretty much bombproof.None of the shows that have been turned into films down the years have every really tried anything really ambitious. They never overspent on them and marketed to an existing audience. So they almost never lose money.

That list seems to be talking about the quality of the shows that were adapted. Mrs Brown D'Movie has made back its budget six times over and is a home video success. Not what I'd call a flop.

As for Guest House Paradiso, it's arguable it would have been more successful (though not better) if they'd kept the names and cashed in on the popularity of Bottom. Obviously they realised that they didn't want to stain Bottom's reputation with the crap film they had made.

The Are You Being Served? film wasn't a hit despite the television series being hugely popular. The two Steptoe and Son films and The Likely Lads film are probably the best spin-off films.

Are You Being Served? wasn't exactly a flop either, though.

In 1971, the "On The Buses" movie spin-off was the #1 film, beating "Diamonds Are Forever". This of course was only in the UK, not worldwide!

The Inbetweeners Movie did quite well didn't it?

I liked One Foot in the Algarve but I'm not sure how well it did commercially.
