Scan old rare books to pc

Hi all,

I think this is the right place to get an answer to my question. I have a good collection of books. Some of the rare books are passed over by my uncle. I tried scanning the books using the canon scanner but shadows are appearing when scanned. Few books are very old to difficult to scan. I read about converting documents into digital format (http://www.ashconversions.com/resources) using digital imaging technology. Is it possible to do so, in my situation too? If not, please suggest some other method.

Thanks

Why not a hand held portable scanner? It can get a better scan in between the pages than a regular scanner without damaging it. Though I don't think they're ideal for archival quality. By that I mean not so much in resolution but it can be tricky trying to get an image that's not distorted dimension wise as you move the scanner slowly with your hand. Not to mention having the same problem with a regular scanner/copier that shows streak lines on images after a scan.

Only other way I think of is take photos of each page with a DSLR set on a frame with flat lighting. Or like a lightbox.

Here are a few links where you can build your own book scanner and it might be cheaper than using a service if

you care about the time it takes to scan each page and constantly making backups.
