I have a 2001 BMW 330Ci and I was wondering if anyone could recommend an error code reader for me for when the "check engine" light is on.

Every car built since the mid 90s has an OBD port you can access. The location varies from car to car but yours should have one.
If you have an Android phone/tablet, you can buy a bluetooth dongle for the port and then download Android software that will talk to it.
Mine cost about $20 on Amazon and I use "Torque" software that cost $5 to download.
