Keyfob usually but not always works

Just a couple of weeks ago, I bought a used car, a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser, which is the first car I've ever had, that has key fobs. Usually the key fobs work fine, but occasionally they don't and I have to use a key. (I just put brand new batteries in one of the fobs.) Is this a reason for concern? And P.S., is it true that if there's a problem with a fob, the problem is the fob itself, and not the car?

A while ago I had a 2000 Jaguar XK that frequently had problems with the key fob.

I'm not sure what sort of problems you're having but with mine, it was the buttons that unlocked and locked the doors.

I replaced the batteries and made sure the battery contacts were good but that didn't help.

I took the key fob apart (carefully) and discovered that the contacts between the buttons and the circuit board were very dirty because the rubber had started to break down.

Replacement key fobs were a couple hundred dollars so instead of buying new ones, I used to have to take it apart once or twice a year to clean the contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol.
