Short road trip in USA - renting a car

I will be heading to the US and want to travel around by car for less than a week. Starting in Chicago and via Niagara Falls and Burlington area to New York. Now I was checking car rentals and it is very expensive due to the one way fee. So I was wondering if anyone can help me with this, so I do not have to pay $500+ for four days of car rental. Any tips?!

Rent at a major airport at your starting point and return the car to a major airport at your end point. These types of one way rentals are the cheapest as the major airports are always rotating their on hand cars.

Rent at O'Hare and return to Laguardia. Or something to that effect.
