The easiest way to think of an AWD system is to take a front wheel drive system and spin the whole engine/transmission assembly 90 degrees, so the transmission is now behind the engine, rather than next to it.
Add drive axles for both the front and rear wheels and replace the axle shafts that were originally coming out of the transmission for drive shafts that would connect the transmission to each drive axle and (for all tense and purposes) you now have an AWD system.
A computer is not necessarily a requirement for an AWD system.
