Thing is, though, that the Vega was a clone of the amazing Opel Manta Ray. We had a Vega wagon, and the Manta coupe. That Manta would just SPIN, and the engine was iron-clad. I don't know how the quality managed to break down so precipitously between the finely-tuned Opel and the tuneless Vega.
If you were lucky, apparently, you managed to get a Vega with all-Opel running gear; my grandfather bought one of those, brand-new in 1972. Probably because it was the Kammback wagon - not a real station wagon, but a metal-sided 'coupe express.'
