Do people frequently gain weight when they come to the U.S.?
Do people frequently gain weight when they move or make a long visit to the United States? I really think they do, but my evidence is anecdotal at best. I am an American with many South African cousins. It's a long story. Many of my South African cousins seem to gain weight when they come here. One of them said the U.S. has tons of unhealthy food, huge portions and many restaurants and food stores that are open late or 24 hours. When retired tennis legend Martina Navratilova first defected from Czechoslovakia to the U.S. she gained a lot of weight. It was remarkable considering how many calories are burned by professional tennis players.
