What is your favourite piece of work by Goya?
Mine is The Third of May, 1808
shareI saw it in the Prado
shareYou'll love it if you do
shareI also love that etching, 'El sueño de la razón produce monstruos' (the sleep of reason brings forth monsters).

But I like all the 'Caprichos' series.

Goya is one of the greats that, for some reason, I've never really warmed to. I appreciate his qualities but never quite feel them... I don't know why for sure, but I can't love his work. Not that the picture you link to isn't fine, though.
My theory, which may be complete bullsh!t, is that Goya expresses a sort of cruelty - a cruelty of the eye - and this repels me, viscerally, and compromises the other attractive qualities. But that may be nonsense. Perhaps I just don't get his Spanish darkness...
Call me Ishmael...
Indeed. A kind of angry, almost sinister quality.
