Thanks for the heads up. Would love to go to one of those.

The Liotard exhibition is rather good. One thing I discovered from reading the catalogue is that he and his work divided contemporary viewers and crucially, most other well known pastellists thought he was a total fraud and hack. Liotard's portraits avoided the lively swagger and stylistic bravura popular in the period, and so was often seen as flat and lacking spirit. Whereas we now are more ready to view his informality and clarity as dispassionate and calm truthfulness.

I saw ai weiwei instead (royal academy). Was an extremely good exhibition.

I was going to go into that too but it was too much to do both on one visit. It's on for a few more weeks so I may get to see it yet.

I liked the trees in the courtyard. I liked the blurb that accompanied them rather less.

Yeah I agree. The work inside is a lot more significant. The recent work shown at the bienalli is there and it's what I mainly went to see.
It's a mixed bag

It's a mixed bag. Personally I prefer the work being shown at hauser and wirth atm.
